Secret Drifter of The Sea
Plankton is Greek for drifter — living things too small to swim against the sea, that go wherever the water carries them. On 29 August, eleven children aged five to twelve went looking for them: sampling the water at Pantai Tembeling, then putting what they caught under a microscope to find out what had been drifting past them all along.

How the morning ran

Meet the plankton
We showed the children pictures of zooplankton and phytoplankton and let them guess which was which, before telling them.

Build a net, take a sample
They learnt how plankton sampling is done, using a plankton net we made ourselves, and collected a sample from the beach water.

Prepare the slides
The sample came back to base, where the children helped prepare it on slides ready for the microscope.

Under the microscope
Every child got hands-on time at the eyepiece — exploring the instrument itself, and seeing the living things and the properties of the water they had been standing in an hour earlier.

What did we learn?
We closed with simple questions about the morning, and small rewards for the children who answered correctly.
A morning at Pantai Tembeling
On 15 August we ran a Little Marine Scientists session at Pantai Tembeling with 22 children. They spent the morning on the shoreline — looking closely at what the tide had left behind, asking a great many questions, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Here is how it went.
